Apt MD Peter Collingridge worked at Canongate Books from 1997-2001, during which time he edited the website, which went through two iterations.
The second edition of www.canongate.net ran from 2003-2007, was designed by Pentagram’s Angus Hyland, and used an early version of Apt’s TLC publishing systems. The site included a dedicated area for the book trade, lively news and events, and rich extracts and content for all books
At launch, The Guardian said of the site,
“At last – a publisher’s site that feels like a cool club filled with well-read friends rather than a lazy corporate exercise.”
Phenomenally popular, the site converted up to 8% of visitors to purchasing customers, and boasted a loyal and regular readership.
Many thousands were subscribed to the weekly emails, including the Poetry Provider, and were “members” of the site. Membership was free, and offered purchasers a free book of the month with each purchase. Familiar book shop offers – 3 for 2 – were used across the site along with a flat 30% discount.
