Dundee School of Media Arts & Imaging

I went to Dundee last week to give a talk about ‘being a producer’ to a load of lovely students. It’s something I don’t really feel qualified to know very much about in the big scheme of things. Producer was always the job title I got lumped with. I felt particuarly vulnerable when I realised I was sharing the train from Edinburgh with Bob Last, a proper producer of feature films and stuff [IMDB page]. Luckily he didn’t show up to my talk - but about 120 students came to the cinema in the DCA to hear what I did have to talk about.

I’ve uploaded an edited version of last week’s presentation to SlideShare.net. Slideshare is ‘YouTube for PowerPOint’ but unfortunately it is pretty limited. It doesn’t do audio, video, transitions, and your file size is limited to 20MB. So, I’ve stripped out all the assets and uploaded the presentation, and for anyone who is interested, the links to the files in the presentation are in order below. Update: all of the fonts are wrong as well, but there you go..

I really enjoyed giving this talk, and putting it together. (I also used Apple’s Keynote software for the first time which absolutely rules. It makes Powerpoint - to which it can also export - look like handdrawn stuff for kids.) The students were great, and I spent some time afterwards answering a few questions and going around the department talking to any students who felt like it.

The most gratifying piece of feedback was from the projectionist, who after tolerating my requests for a radio mike (so I wouldn’t be sat behind a lecturn, which I hate the idea of) said after the show that it was ‘ridiculously slick’. Which I was quite happy about.
