Hi - this may seem obvious, but is the subject listing colour-coded by frequency of click-thrus? And also sorted in order by descending hit count?

Actually, it’s not to do with clicks - it’s to do with tags. Each article is tagged with n subjects. The heatmap just ranks the most popular tags, and therefore gives an idea of what the blog content is about. It’s a nicer tag cloud, basically. With colour and more typographical constraints.
And the order *is* a little funky. It was “inspried” by the Guardian’s Comment Is Free heatmap:
