New project live: The Wisdom of Whores
If things have been quiet around here - in terms of blog posts at least - it’s because we’ve been running fast at a number of projects over the last few months. No excuse for paltry blogging, but we’re coming to the point where some of these projects are now going live.
The first out is a site for Elizabeth Pisani’s whistleblower on the AIDS industry, The Wisdom Of Whores, published by Sara Holloway at Granta. You can view the site here.
Elizabeth knows her stuff - she’s worked in AIDS prevention for over ten years around the world for organisations such as WHO and the UN, and is terrifyingly smart. But this isn’t your usual AIDS book.
What’s great about the book - and the site, we hope - is Elizabeth. Rather than being “a book about AIDS”, Elizabeth - with her background as a sassy, irreverent journalist as well as a policy wonk - describes the book as being “about sex and drugs”. (Which will really help our spam count.) Elizabeth tells it as she sees it, which is upfront, unapologetic about conventions, and with great style. She’s incredibly readable, and hell - she even makes her own films with moments like “Ines has a penis”. She’s the perfect author for us to work with in as much as we can give her a platform and she’ll use it to kickstart a huge amount of debate (we hope!).
With Elizabeth like a coiled sprung desperate to out the myths and hypocrisy of the AIDS industries and most of those around it, a blog seemed like the right approach. Launching on World AIDS day - Saturday December 1st - with an op-ed in the Guardian, the site hopes to be a new focus for debate around the myths of AIDS and how it is treated.
It’s early days yet, but do take a look - we’re rather proud of it. It’s a WordPress job with a lovely theme on top of it, and some nifty little features. (Nice work, James.)
